What should I major in ?
I have three career top choices. The first is Hotel Manager-so I was thinking of majoring in hospitality managment. But that seems like a pretty limited major. My other two top choices are travel writer, or a parade coordinator/ show director (like tara anderson is for disney). But I don’t know what to major in for these two jobs. Please Help! I don’t want a one-dimensional degree, and I’m willing to double major.
Hospitality Management is not a one dimensional degree, it is actually fairly versatile. If you stay general, you could qualify for any of the three majors you listed. Tourism Management, Events Management will also qualify you for Parade Coordinator/Show Director – but be prepared to do a lot of grunt work to gain experience (such is the hospitality industry).
If you wish, you can pick up business or marketing as a second major or even to minor in. It will help give you a little more flexibility if you decide to pursue a corporate career. I should note that picking up the aforementioned major/minor would not be necessary if you were going the Hotel Manager route. You’ll find most of the classes to be redundant. Only pick up business major/minor if you are majoring in Events or Tourism.
If decided to pursue travel writing, you should work on your writing skills and a degree (whether you major or minor) in English or Journalism should help build a portfolio.
